I am back

Posted on 15 October 2008 by Carine Olivia

My plane touched down at 2.30am on Monday morning. The flight was very boring. I couldn’t sleep thanks to a bunch of oz guys who were chatting and joking (as well as singing) loud (non stop) the whoooole night. I was the last one to pick up my luggage — too busy at the Duty Free shop browsing through the liqueurs and wines. I wanted to get a bottle of Amarula but they didn’t have! In the end I bought a bottle of Baileys (coffee flavour) and a sherry wine.

Well I had a good time in Western Australia (Perth / Joondalup). I already miss their cool spring weather, the beautiful houses and yards, the non-crowded-places and empty lands and the beautiful parks and lakes. But I am glad to be back in Singapore — Familiar territory. Back into my man’s arms. My cat. My bed. My TV. My house. I’ve missed the convenience of going to the nearby supermarket anytime hehe.

On the last day of school, we went clubbing. Then on my last 2 days in Perth, my cousins brought me to Hillarys Boat Harbour, Wanneroo Park and Swan Valley, where we tasted cheese & wine, chocolate and nougat. Bought a bottle of sweet wine (yeah I like wine that has some sweetness in it) and Mondo nougat. I also wanted to buy some strawberries and bring back to SG but I was worried that I’d exceed my 20kg luggage allowance — In the end my luggage was exactly 20kg and my hand back exactly 7kg — just nice! I didn’t shop much. I think I mostly shopped for food — 2.5kg of nougat, 1kg of salami (it was cheap! only $10 for 1 kg), 1.5kg of mixed chocolates, 1 bottle of wine and some souvenirs from Perth.

The weekend

Posted on 06 October 2008 by Carine Olivia

Thanks cuz for bringing me around. We visited The Maze followed by Perth Royal Show on Saturday. Managed to see a live koala with her 4 little babies at The Maze. On Sunday I wanted to rest at home. This week is less packed as we only have one lab class (exercise physiology) in the morning. We will be doing our own testing during this lab class. My group, which is the five of us, is going to test on the effects of creatine on sprinting performance and fatigue level. The 3 guys will be the subjects. I’m off to class now.

School

Posted on 01 October 2008 by Carine Olivia

Nothing much here. We have lab classes everyday, sometimes from 9am to 5pm. So the whole day is spent in school, but sometimes there are long breaks in between class. Friday is our least busy day — just an hour lab in the morning. We are planning to visit Fremantle this Friday. Here ’s a couple of pictures taken in school.

Perth: Day 2 and 3

Posted on 28 September 2008 by Carine Olivia

I’m in Joondalup now, where I will be staying for the next 2 weeks. The apartment is walking distance to ECU. We went for a jog this morning. Ahh lovely weather to jog — it’s like winter in Mauritius.

This is the apartment that we are renting — AUD$1200 for 2 weeks. We are on the ground floor. There are 2 bedrooms and 2 bathroms, a kitchen which is well equipped (together with a Jamie Oliver recipe book hehe) and a living room. There’s the Lakeside mall nearby too.

Perth: Day 1

Posted on 26 September 2008 by Carine Olivia

The weather is lovely! It is cold at times but I like this kind of weather. So far I’ve only visited the City — went to Swan River, Kings Park, some shopping malls and can’t remember where else. Perth is nice, it’s not crowded and there are nice greeneries. Tomorrow cuz is driving me to Joondalup.

Perth here I come!

Posted on 24 September 2008 by Carine Olivia

I am flying to Perth tomorrow, Thursday. I am feeling a mixture of everything. I’m excited to be going to somewhere I’ve never been before but I don’t like that feeling of being away from my two precious for over two weeks. Thank God dar has recovered from his chest infection and fever. He was in hospital for 5 nights last week. I’ve also recovered from my flu.

Anyway, my luggage is done — I think I’ve brought enough warm clothes. According to the weather forecast, it’ll be Min 13 and Max 17 on Thursday. I’ll be staying with my cousin for the first two nights. On Friday I plan to hang around Perth city on my own before meeting up with two friends in the afternoon. On Saturday morning I’m meeting the rest of my course mates at the airport and then we are heading together to Joondalup where our scool and apartment is located.

Skinfold test

Posted on 21 July 2007 by Carine Olivia

So yesterday we learned the 7 sites skinfold test using an expensive caliper. I seriously need to practise more on this, especially when it comes to picking up the skinfold (I don’t know if I’m pinching too much or too little) and marking the landmarks. So basically I need to re-do everything!! Dar came to fetch me after class (poor boy waited for an hour plus) and we had dinner at the nearby coffee shop. I need to go back to the lab class later because I forgot a bag there!! duh ….

A few things to take note of …

  • Ensure that all of the skinfold measurements are located on the right side of the body
  • Pick up the skinfold between the thumb and the index finger so as to include two thicknesses of skin and subcutaneous fat
  • Apply the callipers about one centimetre from the fingers and at a depth about equal to the thickness of the fold
  • Very slightly release the pressure of the fingers so the greater pressure is exerted by the caliper
