Gateau Patates & Lunch
Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers out there! It’s a little too early to wish my mum. In Mauritius, we celebrate on the last Sunday in May. Anyway, how was your weekend? I thought it went as quickly as it came! Oh by the way, did ya notice the new layout?
We lunched at my sister’s place today. I made Gateau Patates (sweet potato cakes) in the morning. This was my second attempt. First attempt was a flop! They tasted better this time round. Of course I had to find ways to make mine healthier LOL. I pan fried them.
Here they are, my Gateau Patates

Recipe is at the bottom of this post. Before that, here are some eats we had for lunch

Homemade Fried Rice

Homemade Honey Glazed Chicken

Apple + Mango salad

My brother brought some Popiah x 4 packets …

And then there was cake! A fruity mango sponge cake. Niiiiice. Loved the sliced mangoes!

Gateau Patates (or sweet potato cakes)
Recipe adapted from here. This is my modified version.
Ingrédients:
- 600g sweet potatoes (I used the normal one – not the red Japanese one)
- 3 tbsp flour
- 3 tbsp desiccated coconut + more for the filling (I didn’t use the extra though)
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar (to taste — add more if it’s not sweet enough)
- 2 tsp vanilla essence
- Oil to pan fry
Préparation
- Wash and boil the sweet potatoes until soft. Then peel and mash. Let cool.
- Add the desiccated coconut, vanilla essence and sugar to the mashed sweet potato. Set aside for a couple of minutes before adding the flour. Add more flour if your think the mixture is too soft. However don’t add too much, otherwise you will end up with tough sweet potato cakes.
- Shape into balls and if the mixture is too sticky to handle (which, in my opinion is always sticky), sprinkle it with a little bit of flour.
- Using your palm, press each ball into small disk (the size of your palm).
- Place some coconut in the centre and fold into half. Seal the edges using a folk — I skipped step 5.
- Drizzle some oil in a medium hot pan.
- Pan fry — I prefer pan frying mine.
- Let cool before serving. They can be kept for a couple of days.

Hi,
Do you know where to buy “carri poulet” and “Du Thin” ? in Singapore ? Went all around the supermarkets (aka Fairprice/ Cold Storage). Can’t seem to find them. Maybe I’m looking at the wrong places…
I just got a new interest in cooking :). Got fed up of going to foodcourts to eat, gonna affect my health in the long run.
Will make sure to check ur recipes (esp mru ones)
Cheers

@ Kris
They sell “carri poulet” at Fairprice, Shop & Save, Cold Storage etc. Look at the cold veggie section … They are kept in a plastic bag.
As for thyme, you can find them at Carrefoure Suntec and at some Cold Storage outlets. I’ve never seen any at Fairprice… I tried growing thyme before (brought fresh ones from MRU) but they didn’t last long! I miss thyme … they are so readily available and cheap in MRU! Pas manz sa souvent ici a coz pas trouver meme!
