Journey of a decade

Posted on Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 by admin  |  9 Comments »

Since I’ve been online for almost a decade, I thought of summarizing some significant events that took place in that past 10 years. Well this post is more or less for my reading pleasure. Hopefully I will still be blogging by the time I turn 37 (?)

2001

  • I flew to Singapore for my studies. A new journey began.
  • I picked up running.
  • I joined Track & Field (because I wanted to lose weight I think), where I first met the (now) husband.
  • I ran my first 21km half marathon (Sheare’s Bridge).

2002

  • I got two hamsters and named them “uncle hammie” and “ti femme hammie”.

2003

  • I cycled around Singapore.
  • The (now) husband went  into army for his National Service.
  • My bag got stolen at the stadium.
  • My very first hamster “uncle hammie” died and I was  devastated.
  • I ran my first 42km marathon (Singapore Marathon). I finished in 5 hrs 25 & followed Jeff Galloway’s run/walk method.

2004

  • I finished the first half of my 5 years of tertiary school life.
  • I got my first full time job as a web designer.
  • I went back to Mauritius for the holidays and for my sister’s wedding.

2005

  • I became a Singapore PR.
  • I bought my first ever notebook (Acer Aspire 1690).
  • The (now) husband finished his 2.5 yrs of army.
  • I hurt my leg -  ITB.
  • I adopted a 2-month old cat from SPCA and named him Mikey!
  • I ran my 3rd marathon which is my last marathon till date. I finished in 3hr55, my best timing so far.

    nice!

    kudos to you! :D

how come your studies were 5 yrs!?! conjoint degree?

@ “I hurt my leg – ITB” – that’s not an injury, is it? you are either running too much or you are not running properly :P (read poor cor strength!)

you better be still blogging in 10yrs!
if not, i’ll be forcing you or pestering you to continue! :P

btw, if you don’t mind me asking, howz the living costs in Singapore? and in average, what’s the accommdation/ rent like and how much will an apt or property be?

  2. admin Says:

    @ Waz

Nope, first 3 years for my diploma and the last 2 years to finish my degree.

As for my ITB, yeah it was due to too much mileage + my right foot landing is biochemically wrong. I was lucky the sharp pain lasted for a while only.

Living cost in Singapore? I don’t speak for everyone but on average:

Public transport: $100 monthly from home to work & back.
Taxi: $15 for a single trip during non peak hrs.
Utility Bills: $100 – $130 monthly (incl. water & electricity (mainly aircon) & other utilities).
Food: An average food court dish costs about $4. As for grocery purchase, you will find some prices in my blog posts “tag: groceries” …
Handphone bill: Cheapest plan is about $25 per month.
    Movie: $10 per tix.

As for house rental, I am not sure of the current market as it’s been couple of years since I rented. Maybe it’s about $800 for a 1 room shared hdb apartment, $1.6k monthly for a 2 bedroom hdb appartment, about $2.5k for a 2 bedroom condo. It depends on the location & condition of the apartment … Unless you are PR or Sporean, you won’t be able to buy hdb apartments (govt. apartment). You can only buy private ones (condo, landed houses).

Are you planning on moving to SG??? How about living cost in NZ as compared to the above?

geez! i came to your blog. i read your comment and i went to bed! in the process i left the tab opened 2-3 hrs forgetting that i wanted to leave a comment! insane!

anyho, here i am 2-3 hrs later.

Rent here can range from a minimum of $150 to up to $1k (weekly). hostel and/or student accommodation is obviously at the lower end of the spectrum. From $200 to $400 weekly, you are looking at maybe 2-bedroom house (maybe! coz it’s dependent on location). If you are lucky, some landlords will include power and water in the rent to sweeten the deal. But if you are in student/ hostel accommodation, water and power is no big issue. You pay only rent. Anything around $1k or more, will be like city center penthouse-like accommodation (+/- the facilities you can think of). They are really nice!

since i’m in a hostel-like accommodation and i’ve been in student accommodation throughout uni, i don’t know how much is power and water. But from what i’ve been told, it’s like another $100 monthly. I’m not sure if it’s true. But i do know for a fact that comes winter, it gets steeper as everybody wants their heater on! Last winter was one of the worst winters. Power companies hit the jackpot in that everybody had their heaters on full blast.

on average i spend $50-$100 on groceries (weekly)! when i was still at uni, i would spend about $20-$50 (weekly) on average. i think that’s coz before i got to share a few stuffs with my flatmates. but now, i’m on my own. i tend to go for very basics only. so obviously, this’ll vary greatly depending upon what you buy or what kinda products you are into.

an avarage food court dish is within $10 (around the $5 mark). if you want to spend some time at a good restaurant with friends, you may end up spending anything around $20-$50. this one is hard to tell because when i’m out with my friends, everybody shout for everybody! it gets really crazy! we end up not knowing who is paying what or for who! rofl…

i’m not on a phone plan. i spend most of my time on the web. so, it’s not worth it. hmm, having said that, maybe i should start using web mobile! :P

mane, your movie tickets are so cheap! here it’s like $15 if it’s a new release! bloody rip-off!

nah, don’t worry…i’m not thinking of moving to SG! there is already too many Mauritians over there! :P i’m just curious coz recently one of my friends (who just finished uni) and i were talking about living cost overseas (south east asia in general).

    @ Hairol

Yeah in 2001 :) These were the good old days huh hehe. One by one is getting married now!

  6. admin Says:

I have not stayed in hostel because my siblings were already renting places outside school.

You are not on any phone plan? What if someone wants to reach you when you are outside or vice versa?

When movie ticket price increased not long ago, we were complaining but $10 is still considered cheap compared to other countries. On non peak days you can still get them at $7 I think! But we don’t really go to movie theaters that often as we prefer to buy / rent dvds and sit at the comfort of our own home :D That said, some movies are still definitely worth the trip to theaters.

I think being vegetarian can save you quite a bit at the store (?)

Yeah, there a lot of Mauritians over here! How about NZ?

  7. waz Says:

    yeah same here…
these days, i rent dvds or i just dwld them!
if not i get them from friends who have dwlded them.
every now and then, i’ll go to the movies with friends but these have become less frequent!

from what i have been told, there would be about 500 Mauritians but i’ve met only a handful!

@ “I think being vegetarian can save you quite a bit at the store (?)” – yes and no…i like my mock meat from “tofu”/ chinese shops and these can be quite expensive @ times…

Hi Kris, thanks for visiting my blog! I have Mauritian friends living in SG but I’m not too sure about the Mauritius Community group. Is it a big group? What sort of activities do they organise? Okay tell me more about it!
