Pretty purplish pink

6 am. Alarm rings. Get up. Change. Head out. Run. 7 km tempo run. Done. Happy.

What could be better than start the day with a delicious Blackberry Smoothie? It’s a great way to get your nutritional and energy boost in the morning.  I think I’m gonna have this every morning! The frozen blackberry on the left looks pretty doesn’t it?

Last night I added frozen bananas to my blackberry smoothie but the strong banana taste killed the blackberry taste. Today I only added some low fat milk, 2 big ice cubes, some sugar and some frozen blackberries. It tasted so good!

And on another note …

My waffles (which I made last night) didn’t come out as pretty as the smoothie … I used another recipe this time. If you want to see my other post on waffles, click here. The difference between the two recipes? This one uses an extra half cup of ground almond, much less oil and one egg less. The waffles were actually very fluffy and light and they tasted pretty good too. However I had a hard time getting them done and the end results were urm not very attractive as you can see …

What a mess!

The 1 teaspoon of oil inside the batter wasn’t enough and I didn’t spray enough nonstick cooking spray to the waffle irons — I only sprayed once to be exact (actually spraying only once during the initial stage should be enough shouldn’t it). When I opened the waffle maker, some parts would stick to the top and bottom. I think I was in a hurry to get these waffles done. The one with half its top removed (picture above) wasn’t cooked enough! And some were burnt. These waffles are now in the freezer. Waffles freeze well. They don’t taste exactly the same as when they are fresh, but it’s pretty close.

Off to the waterfalls tomorrow.

Smoothies are not very popular in Mauritius. It’s only now that I’ve seen some coffee shops selling smoothies. Once I bought a smoothie in a food court but it didn’t taste good at all :| I like smoothies but I’ve never prepared them at home. Maybe I should give it a try. It’s quite easy, right?

I’ve never froze waffles before. I just freeze the remaining batter and then use it again some other time to make fresh waffles.

*eyeing the smoothie one more time*
    I want smoothiee! :(

    Angele’s last blog post..Now that’s a big whopper!

Hey! Thanks for visiting :) omg I’ve visited yours and your food photos are amazing! I must learn some baking from you! Definitely gotta bookmark your blog :)

ps: Are we by any chance neighbours, as in staying in the same estate but different block? hehe

You have to check Phoon Huat – http://www.phoonhuat.com. They definitely carry way more baking stuffs than the other supermarkets as they only sell baking stuffs. And the price of their products are also cheaper — well I haven’t compared all but they ground almonds are cheaper. There is one branch at Jurong East which will be nearer to you.

They are pretty popular here. I mean, there are a lot of shops that sell smoothies… Yeah smoothies are super easy! Just blend everything together :) I prefer to use more ice or use frozen fruits to get that thickness of the smoothie. Bananas are good at thickening the smoothies too but I know you don’t like bananas haha :)

What fruits are in season in Mauritius at the moment?

As for freezing the remaining waffle batter, I read that “as waffles are classified as a quick bread, which means the leavening agent acts quickly as soon as it is mixed with moist ingredients. If it isn’t baked soon, the leavening agent fizzles out.”

Were the waffles still fluffy, light and tasted good even after you had frozen the batter?

i really like your blog alot, maybe its the simplicity (yet modern) appeal of the things u like to cook/bake :) can i link u up?

Fruits that are in season right now? Hmm… goyaves de chine, strawberries, raspberries. Strawberries are kinda expensive in grocery stores! A small basket for approximately Rs 80!

But I bought frozen berries today at Super u and I’m planning to prepare my first home-made smoothie tomorrow. Hahaha, I had to look for smoothie recipes on the web that don’t use bananas :P I’ve come across some interesting recipes with pineapples and peaches, ice cream and yogurt that I wanna try :)

As for the waffles, it’s been such a long time but as far as I remember, the waffles were still fluffy and tasted good even after I froze the batter. Of course, the batter was frozen and re-used a few days after. Not like a month after! Hahaha!

Yes mine is the pink block. But there are two estates that are similar … I’m not too sure where Sembawang mart is, although I have a feeling that I’ve passed by very often when I run hehe.

Yes you can link me. I’m gonna link you up too :)

Hey you know, I’ve never eaten Mauritan strawberries and raspberries! Strawberries over here (imported from Korea or US or Australia) are also around Rs80 (for maybe about 8 pieces?) and above. I prefer Korean strawberries as they are sweeter!

Fresh raspberries are definitely more expensive … maybe about Rs 176 for a very very small packet (maybe about 20 pieces inside). I prefer to get frozen ones.

As for the waffles, I think I would prefer to make extra waffles and freeze them as it’s faster that way hehhe. I’m too lazy to thaw the frozen waffle batter and make fresh waffles again :)

Ok let me know how your smoothies turn out!

haha I remember the pink block. :P I remember thinking that it’s great to see pink hdbs. I’ve seen too many white ones ( white but dirty-looking ones) before that.
Carine, I’ll be on hols as from mid-June! We have to meet up again! :P It’s weird living in Singapore since December and not meeting up with you again. The time I met up with you was back in September when I came to SG for hols only. :P

Definitely! Let’s meet up when you are free :) Yeah I remember the first time when we met hehe.

Mauritian raspberries are tiny and tasteless! Often you will see hawkers on the street selling raspberries. They would sprinkle the raspberries with sugar and serve them to you like that. Maybe to hide how tasteless the raspberries truly are! Hahaha!

The strawberries you have in Sg come from abroad and I bet they’re big and sweet and juicy, right? I remember the strawberries in Canada were enormous! Soooo red and juicy. A delight!

Local strawberries we have in Mtius are not always big and often not very sweet. Definitely not worth the price :(

Angele’s last blog post..Waffles, chocolate sauce and ice-cream

Not all the strawberry sold in Singapore are sweet and big. It depends where they come from. The ones from Korea aren’t that big but they are sweet … well, those that I ate were sweet.
