Groceries (part trois)

I listed out the things that I was going to get …

And we were off to “Giant” supermarket. I will usually tell the husband to give me 1 hr to shop. During this waiting time, he would normally go to other shops inside the shopping mall. Sometimes Many times 1 hr isn’t enough as I tend to look at every other stuffs from the shelves ..

For around $73, I got these, plus a couple of items not shown in the photo. Oh I also got 2 stamps haha. I didn’t really stick to the list… I bought litchies instead of grapes. The litchies were cheap! I got about 60 pieces for only $2. Last week I paid $2  for only 30 litchies… How much do litchies cost in your country?

Their mangosteens were also on sale – $0.19 per 100g! Those 4 mangosteens (right photo below) were less than $2. Mangoes were on sale too. 3 mangoes for $1.89. But there were a lot of soft and over-ripe ones, so I had to choose carefully. I bought 9 mangoes! Well it was the husband’s idea :)

The swiss mushrooms (photo below) were among the “Reduced to clear” items and since I was  planning to use them immediately, I bought a packet of swiss mushroom ($0.80 per packet, usually they cost about $3 – $4), as well as another mushroom mix packet ($1.99, cheap) which was also on sale.  Yeah, I know there are many sales items that I grabbed :P

Veggies included bean sprout ($0.70), asparagus ($0.80 for about 8 stems), yellow onions and lettuce ($1.65). I will get some sweet potato leaves from another supermarket another day as I haven’t seen them at “Giant”. The husband has been bugging me to cook some Sambal Belacan Sweet Potato Leaves :)

Well the husband wanted snacks that we had never tried before. He grabbed these. The one labelled “CHIPS” was nice!!!!!!! Well they were actually rice crackers!

Couple of other things that I got was turkey ham (around $4.65 for 10 slices), fresh salmon ($8), fresh prawns ($1.30 for about 20 small prawns), 10 eggs, sandwich bread, dishwasher liquid, Kraft cheddar cheese (around $4.80), 2kg frozen chicken breast (around $10 instead of $13), cleaning solution (about $8), batteries, freezer bag, sandwich bag etc. I bought my cat’s peewee litter at the petshop ($23).

I have a habit to wash and dry my lettuce before putting them into freezer bags. Saves me time when I just want to make a quick sandwich.

Me: Do you want to eat beef this week?
The husband: *thinking* … hmmm not really.
Me: Are you sure? … very sure? - he likes steaks
The husband:
Yeah
Me:
okay! So this week we will just be having seafood and chicken. No beef. Monday would be

I’m starting to like the idea of planning for the week’s dinner.

So this week’s tentative home dinner menu

  • Monday: Baked salmon with mushrooms + corn
  • Tuesday: Lasagna-style eggplant with prawns  + corn + baked asparagus
  • Wednesday: Celery pasta  + sardines in tomato sauce
  • Thursday: Either eat out or cook a chinese omelette  + Sambal Belacan Sweet Potato Leaves + baked beans
  • Friday: Seafood BBQ maybe or a quick vegetable egg noodle soup

I seldom cook rice as you can see and the husband is okay with that, as sometimes he feels that having rice at night is too heavy. But he has his rice during the day.

I also do that for lettuce. It’s more convenient.
wow you bought so much more than you originally planned.
3 mangoes for $1.89 is really cheap. I’m looking for green mangoes but I usually find ripe or semi-ripe mangoes. :(

You are a left-hander? I’m surprised. I didn’t notice that when I had dinner at your place.

Yes the mangoes were a good bargain. Have you tried the Wet Market? I always see green mangoes (for salads) in wet markets…

No I’m a right-hander… I used my right hand to take the pic and pretended to write :P

The baked salmon with mushroom sounds delicious! Would you believe me if I told you that I’ve eaten fresh salmon only once in my life? It was in some sushi, however it was not raw but semi-cooked rather and I found it delicious.

I like to wash my lettuce, dry the leaves and put them in food storage bags too :P The lettuce is more handy that way, right? hehe

Btw, I went to look for vanilla pods. 2 vanilla pods for rs 46 at Super U. Not that expensive but not cheap either. I think it depends where the vanilla pods come from. This one from France is more expensive.

Around rs 70 if I remember well. We have a lot of Vahine products in Mauritius and they’re quite good.

I prefer smoked salmon than raw salmon. Not that I don’t eat raw ones …

Rs 46 … so $ 2 SGD for 2 vanilla pods. I think it’s cheaper than here. But I don’t know. I can’t remember anymore where I saw vanilla pods! I gotta check the price here first before I ask my mum to get for me. Thanks for checking the prices! :) Have you tried the Rs 46 vanilla pods before?

I thought vanilla pods are sold in glass containers (pods + the vanilla essence together) until I saw the Vahine vanilla pods hehe …

Speaking of vanilla, I am thinking of Mauritius vanilla tea which I’m missing hehe.
