Looking for a dress

I am not much into clothes shopping and I do not have much luck with evening dresses. Blame my body arg. This afternoon, sis and I spent about 4 hrs in Orchard looking for a dress to wear to my brother’s wedding. We went to Isetan and then to CKTang. Oh yeh, 4 hrs spent in only two department stores! I believe this is common in ladies huh. What do you think?

Well, there was a nice dress from Allure and another one from Daniel Yam. I will choose one of them. I will most probably go back to Orchard when my parents are around.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you have . . .

. . . flabby arms

Opt for a dress with a half- or three-quarter-sleeve, or wear a shrug to hide those butterfly wings. A little pinched on the shoulder with some ruffly fabric over problem part of the upper arm works wonders, but avoid big poofball sleeves.

. . . thick neck

A V-neck draws attention away and elongates the line.

. . . broad shoulders

Go with V-necks or scoop-necks, which break up the bulk and draw attention more toward the middle, away from the width. Avoid spaghetti straps or strapless styles.

. . . narrow or sloped shoulders

Go with a straight-across bateau or boatneck, which will give you a wider look.

. . . big bust

The bateau or boatneck works well on you because it draws the eye up, instead of toward that cavernous cleavage. Some V-necks will work, too, because it will cut the bulk of a big bust. Watch where the V widens, though, or you’ll end up revealing more of yourself. Also, go with a thinner fabric, since you don’t want to add more bulk.

. . . no chest

Grab a simple padded bra and you’re probably good to go. Semi-flat chested woman look great in a round neck, a sleeveless or a sheath that’s slightly fitted and straight. Add a short bolero jacket for fun and to draw attention toward the shoulders.

. . . flabby belly

Avoid clingy fabrics, though ruched fabrics can help hide rolls. The empire waist is usually a safe bet, since it flares from high on the waist and hides what lies beneath. Also, it never hurts to wear a body-shaper, which can take inches off your midsection and cinch the waist for more definition.

. . . long waist

Try a wide belt to break up that torso.

. . . short waist

Use a ribbon or narrow belt to help with that distance. Or, you probably don’t need a belt at all, though they are very “in” again.

. . . heavy-set

It really helps to add some color and to wear clothes that fit properly. Make sure your sleeves don’t fall below the wrist and add a colorful lightweight shawl or tunic-type top to break up the black.

Mom and dad are coming to Singapore next Sunday, on Mother’s day! Mother’s Day in Mauritius (as well as in France, Morocco, Algeria, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Sweden) is always the last Sunday in May. In Singapore and some other countries, it’s on the second Sunday in May.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to see my parents!
